The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is a musical that has enjoyed enormous popularity worldwide, and is based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The score was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita, Cats, Sunset Boulevard), and the original English version of the show features lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. It first premiered at Her Majesty's Theatre on London's West End in 1986 and has been playing there ever since. In addition, it has had productions in twenty different countries and almost as many languages. It also had a film adaptation in 2004. The London production celebrated its 25th anniversary in October 2011 with a concert event at the Royal Albert Hall that was streamed to movie theaters around the world and later released on DVD and Blu-Ray.
The original Japanese production of Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera was done by Shiki Productions (劇団四季), and it holds the honor of being the first production of the show ever performed in a language other than English. It first opened at the Nissei Theatre (日生劇場) in Tokyo on April 29th, 1988, and has since moved to theatres all over the country. It is currently performing at the New Nagoya Musical Theatre (新名古屋ミュージカル劇場). The lyrics were translated into Japanese by Shinsuke Andou (安東伸介). On December 17, 2010, a Japanese-language dub of the 2004 film was broadcast on television all over Japan, featuring the same lyrics as the stage show as well as many actors from the stage production providing the voices of their characters for the film dub.
This English translation of the Japanese lyrics is based on the lyric booklet included in the 1992 cast album. Differences I've noticed from other casts will be noted wherever I've found them. "Before the Premiere," however, is not featured on any cast album, so I have transcribed what I could make out of the lyrics from recordings of the actual stage show and from the Japanese dub of the 2004 movie.
